Introduction

Antarctica is the fifth largest continent on earth. It is located in the South Pole and is mostly made of ice. In this article we'll look at websites, databases and some books to help you find information about Antarctica.

General websites

These are some great websites to start learning about Antarctica.

Britannica School Primary

Britannica School is one of the EPIC resources. EPIC is a collection of reliable databases covering lots of different topics. It's put together especially for New Zealand school students. This database can read the articles to you too.

  • Search Britannica for 'Antarctica.'

  • Choose the result Antarctica (Continent).

  • Select headings like Geography and Plants and Animals to find out more.

  • You can select the play button by each heading to have the information read aloud to you.

  • Explore some of their Antarctica images on the left hand side of the page.

Tips: To get to the EPIC resources you will need a password from your school librarian first. Or you can chat with one of our AnyQuestions librarians between 1 and 6pm Monday to Friday and they will help you online. Some EPIC databases may also be available through your public library.

National Geographic Kids

This is another EPIC resource. Access National Geographic Kids magazines, books, and readers. It also includes education videos and images.

Tips: Some websites have advertisements (or ads) which ask us to buy something or tell us to ‘click here’. It’s best to ignore these ads and focus on the information we’re looking for.
